Sunday was the last round of InKart Season 1 at Daytona Tamworth. Freya had already secured the title, but Jess was looking to go one better than last year and secure second place.
In practice/qualifying Jess had to make two kart swaps. Her first kart was Kart 80, which she has had issues with over a number of races there, we are unsure why this keeps getting rolled out to be used! The second kart was one that had been used a grand total of 4 times since the start of the year – and the brakes didn’t work!
The third kart was better, but the five-minute qualifying was starting as she took it out cold from the pits. Despite this, her last 3 laps were all good enough for pole and her best lap was over a second faster than the rest of the field.
Her closest championship rival had finished 3rd in the B Final, so Jess knew 4th or better in the A Final would see her take 2nd overall.
Jess led off from the line, with Freya taking 2nd place into the first corner. The two girls ran close together for a few laps, building a gap to 3rd place behind.
On lap 4, Jess’ kart had a big moment with hopping around T4, slowing her down enough for Freya to get alongside and make a pass for the lead. She stuck with Freya, and 4 laps later made a great move to retake the lead into the final corner.
Jess maintained a gap of half a second after this and was looking comfortable until they caught some back markers, with Freya briefly making it past as Jess got stuck out of position. A brave move 3 wide into the final hairpin just worked out and Jess got herself back in front.
On the penultimate lap, Jess had another big issue with hopping, this time at T6, allowing Freya to take the lead once again. Some excellent defending from her meant that Jess was still behind coming into the final corner. With no room for a move on the inside, Jess went wide to get a better run to the line – and it nearly worked, but she crossed the line just 4 hundredths of a second back.
A great effort and a positive end to a Championship that’s had some difficult moments and bad luck with kart draws.
It was fantastic to see the girls showing what they can do and taking the top 2 spots! Congratulations to Freya on her win today, she’s been a very strong competitor at every round and took a well-deserved Championship title.
